Babas & Borshch Celebrates Successful Move to Lamont

Sep 5, 2017 | Community, Featured

NP-UN Western Bureau.

After four successful years in Andrew, Lamont County’s 5th annual Babas & Borshch Festival has moved to the Town of Lamont.

Festival coordinator Hazel Anaka told New Pathway – Ukrainian News that since the festival is being sponsored by Lamont Country, they want to have it move around to various centres there. The Town of Lamont as the County Seat was the logical choice and is half an hour closer to Edmonton than Andrew.

“Lamont County became the ‘cradle of Ukrainian settlement in Canada’ when 125 years ago the first Ukrainians settled near Star-Edna. All Ukrainians, beginning with those first families and continuing with those who live, work, and contribute today to the Canadian way of life, make us proud. And provide just another reason (besides borshch, pyrohy, pysanky, and dance) to celebrate this rich culture!” explains the festival program brochure.

Among the highlights was the Borshch Cook Off, the Ukrainian Food Fight and the Zabava featuring Edmonton’s Cheremosh Dance Company, the Zemlia Vocal Trio and the Edmonton dance band Trembita.

Baba’s Bazaar featured a great variety of vendors and displays, and the food fair offered six different concessions.

As usual, the festival’s official host, Baba Magda was there to welcome guests and pose for photograph.

Visitors could assume a Ukrainian identity with a personalized historic Festival Passport and were provided a map for a driving tour of historic churches – which is one of the highlights of Lamont County.

There were special activities for children and dance performances by MY Ukrainian Dance Academy (Edmonton) and Promin Adult Dancers (Vegreville).

Among the special presentations were the Pysanka Demo by Christinia Koscielnuk; The Way We Were – 125 years of photo images; Historic Ukrainian Costume display courtesy of Mila Shefel; a presentation by Radomir Bilash on how Baba’s staple food was made; wheat grinding with Wilson Zukiwski; Kids’ Paint a Masterpiece with Andrea Levicki and a talk by Mark Minenko about detainees in Alberta during World War I.
