Mar 1, 2016 | Newpathway, Community, Featured, Business

Every year Ukrainian Credit Union Limited awards scholarships to deserving young members. This year in addition to the scholarships that we offer every year, we are introducing two brand new scholarships.

The first new scholarship recognizes the contribution of Eugene Roman, who until recently served as the Chair of the Board of Directors of Ukrainian Credit Union Limited. This new scholarship (Ukrainian Credit Union Limited Eugene Roman Scholarship, in the sum of $2,000), will be awarded to a candidate of Ukrainian heritage who is enrolled full time in a post-secondary institution in a field of study that will lead to a career in the technology sector (for example Aerospace, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Nanotechnology, Telecommunications, and related fields)

Mr. Roman is widely regarded as a leading Canadian authority on innovation and high-tech. He was recognized as Canadian CIO of the Year in 2015. During his 15 years as the chair, Eugene Roman helped steer UCU through five mergers and acquisitions, including Ukrainian (Sudbury) Credit Union, St. Demetrius Parish Credit Union, Ukrainian (St. Catharines) Credit Union, So-Use Credit Union and United Ukrainian (Hamilton) Credit Union, making it one of the largest ethnic credit unions in Ontario. Under his leadership, UCU was one of the first credit unions in Ontario to implement a Call Centre, which continues today as a key element of the UCU’s service delivery model.

The second new scholarship is the Ukrainian Credit Union Limited New Pathway Journalism Fellowship. Each year, a student that is currently enrolled full time in a post-secondary institution in a field of study that will lead to a career in journalism (print, online, TV, radio) or photojournalism, or a recent graduate of the same, and who shows community involvement, will be named to this fellowship. The chosen individual will be offered the opportunity to work with The New Pathway, writing monthly articles or opinion pieces. If a photojournalist is selected, they will be expected to create monthly photo essays that will be published in The New Pathway. This fellowship will provide the student with a stipend of $3,000 throughout the year that they are working with The New Pathway.
