Ukrainian Canadian Social Services – Toronto Announces Artists for the Bloor West Ukrainian Mural

Aug 22, 2017 | Featured

Ukrainian Canadian Social Services – Toronto.

Ukrainian Canadian Social Services – Toronto has selected three artists: Jerry Rugg (aka birdO), Anna (Шинлова/Shynlova) Bucciarelli, and Andrea Manica to create the Bloor West Ukrainian Mural to be completed in time for the Bloor West Village Ukrainian Festival this September.

We are thrilled to celebrate Canada’s 150 year anniversary and 125 years of Ukrainians in Canada by bringing together multiple Canadian artists, members from the Ukrainian Canadian community, the creative and street art community and the Bloor West neighbourhood. The intent is to create a mural that is a landmark commemorating the immigrant experience and more specifically to create a current and creative physical Ukrainian-Canadian presence in the city: to honour our past but look to our future.

Ukrainian Canadian Social Services – Toronto initiated the Bloor West Ukrainian Mural in September 2016 by sending out a Call for Submissions to create a collaborative large-scale mural located on the east side of the Ukrainian Canadian Social Services building located at Bloor and Jane in Toronto, Ontario.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Ukrainian Canadian Social Services – Toronto is initiating the Bloor West Ukrainian Mural project by creating an original collaborative large-scale mural located on the east side of the Ukrainian Canadian Social Services building on the corner of Bloor and Jane Streets in Toronto, Ontario.

The UCSS-Toronto building is a community focal point where we offer programs and services that promote the wellbeing and improve the quality of life of members of the Ukrainian ethno cultural community and members of the Bloor West community. With the Bloor West Ukrainian Mural project, we would like to contribute to the growing public art scene in and outside of Toronto, as well as bring awareness to the importance of our organization in this city.

Our goal is to bring multigenerational Canadian artists, members of the Bloor West community, and the Ukrainian-Canadian community together to create a long-term mural and landmark commemorating the neighbourhoods of Bloor West and its immigrant experience; to create a current and creative physical Ukrainian-Canadian presence in the city.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Jerry Rugg (BirdO) is a Saskatoon-raised, third generation Ukrainian-Canadian muralist based in Toronto. His work is highly recognizable for his large-scale mural work often composed of vibrant animals and geometric shapes on buildings and walls of Toronto and other parts of the world.
