The Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts (ACUA) featured five artists in its Pottery, Fused Glass, and Jewelry Trunk Show, which ran at the ACUA Gallery and Artisan Boutique, November 3 – 23.

The artists featured were Audrey Uzwyshyn, Irene Pyzyk, Pat Tymkin, Nadia Khikhlovska, and Irina Salouk, who were introduced at the opening reception by Darka Broda-Masiuk. They were as follows:

Irene Pyzyk – Irene grew up in Edmonton and during her teens became interested in pottery, working with clay and other mediums. After getting married she and her family lived in Toronto, Scotland and Ukraine and years ago returned to Edmonton where she continues to express her creative side in pottery.

Audrey Uzwyshyn – Audrey’s pottery can be found in many homes in Edmonton and abroad. She developed her love for the art of pottery as a student of interior design at the University of Manitoba. Audrey is probably best known for her signature piece at the Baran or Ram. A few years back I attended one of her shows in her home and was viewing her vast collection of rams. I had the opportunity to speak with her young granddaughter who told me to study their faces as they were all unique and one could determine the rams personality.

Pat Tymkiw – Resides in Manitoba. Her parents encouraged her creativity, sending her to art classes and finally to art school where she majored in graphic design, photography and ceramics. She graduated with a bachelor of fine arts. Eventually she found her way to working with fused glass.

Irina Salouk – Irina was born in Ukraine and came to Canada 25 years ago. Two years ago she began to express her creativity in making jewelry. She focuses in eihaeniax styles.

Nadia Khikhlovska – She was born in Ukraine and immigrated to Canada 20 years ago. She express creativity through embroidery and jewels making. She does tradition and contemporary styles.
