On Saturday May 23, 2015, GlobalMedic and the Convenience Group hosted an event to showcase the latest GlobalMedic innovative humanitarian intervention in Eastern Ukraine.
Mortar shells and rockets cause extensive damage in Eastern Ukraine. The deadliest damage is caused by the sonic boom of the explosion which obliterates windows and causes sharp shards of glass to become deadly projectiles. The plan is to install blast film onto windows to prevent the blast from killing the vulnerable. Film will be installed onto windows of schools, places of worship and hospitals in the conflict zones. This project is funded by GlobalMedic as a pilot project.
Convenience Group is a Canadian company that is the Ontario master dealer for 3M. They are training GlobalMedic volunteers in the installation process. The volunteers will training local teams in Ukraine to install the film in a school in Mariupol beginning Monday May 25, 2015.
Members of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Euromaidan committee were invited to the event to learn how the film is installed, a smash demonstration and watched a video to see how the blast protection works. In attendance were also MP Bernard Trottier and MP Ted Opitz who both spoke about the need for this type of aid to the vulnerable victims of the conflict in Ukraine.
The Euromaidan Committee members all agreed that they need to get more information out to the community and will be enthusiastically proposing fundraising ideas at their next meeting which they hope will appeal to the project partners and the public.
