Tanya Sklierenko (Markland Wood Pharmacy) for New Pathway, Toronto.

If you are travelling outside of Canada these days, be extra careful about your health and safety! Here are some safety tips on travel health risks and preventative measures to keep you and your loved ones safe during your travels.

  • Prepare and carry a travel health kit while traveling. First aid supplies and medications may not always be readily available in foreign countries or may be different than those offered in Canada. You may want to include: adhesive bandages, hand sanitizer, antiseptic wound cleanser, gauze, packets of oral re-hydration preparations etc.
  • Ensure you have enough medication to last your entire trip. Call your pharmacy ahead of time to make sure everything is ready! Aside from prescription medications, you may want to carry: anti-diarrheal medication, cold and flu medications, pain and fever medications, anti-motion sickness medication, allergy medication, insect repellant etc. The pharmacists at Markland Wood Pharmacy would be happy to assist you in preparing medications for travel.
  • You should purchase travel insurance before you leave Canada. Your travel insurance should include health, life and disability coverage that will help you avoid large expenses should you require treatment outside of Canada. Always carry proof of your health insurance when traveling.
  • You may be at risk for a number of vaccine preventable illnesses when travelling outside of Canada. In order to ensure you receive the appropriate travel vaccinations and medications, visit a Travel Health Clinic before your trip!
