Jayne Buryn Passes Away

Sep 13, 2018 | Featured

NP–UN Western Bureau.

Jayne Lucille Buryn (nee Korol) passed away on July 30, 2018 with her loving husband Bohdan praying by her side as she drew her final breaths in this world.

Born in war-ravaged Germany on July 16, 1947 while her mother was fleeing the oppression of the Soviet Union, Jayne immigrated to Canada with her mother.

She grew up in Calgary, married Bohdan Buryn, and raised her two sons Paul and Adam in Fort Saskatchewan.

While Jayne stayed home for a period of time while raising her young sons, she also had a multifaceted career including helping others as a family counsellor, writing policies and procedures for hospitals, editing for a newspaper, working as a realty agent, serving as a public servant with the provincial Ministry of Finance, and after retirement, she put her talents towards being the Eparchial Communications Coordinator. She submitted many articles for this newspaper in that capacity.

Jayne was also an active volunteer in her community, some examples of the volunteer work Jayne put her heart into included the City of Fort Saskatchewan Economic Development Board, the March West with the RCMP, the Bosnia Children’s Fund, the Job Action Team, the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada, the Eparchial Pastoral Council, and
the parish of St. Nicholas.

“Through her younger formative years, her experiences in multiple areas of her career, her volunteer work, and her service in the church, she grew a sense of justice, common sense, and strong will,” said her son Paul Buryn, in delivering the eulogy.

“For those who found themselves in discussion with her, you knew what her opinion was in relation to an issue and often, you knew what you should think as well.

“Along with this strong will that carried her through many trials and tribulations, she also had a playful and mischievous streak that came out from time to time as many found out, when joke gifts were given or pranks were played at birthdays or anniversaries,” he added.

Jayne is predeceased by her father who was lost in the aftermath of World War II, her step father Stephan Korol, and her mother Anna Korol (nee Chudyk). She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Bohdan Buryn along with his welcoming extended family, her rambunctious sons Paul and Adam, her daughter-in-law Marta, and her beloved granddaughters Kristin, Maia and Xenia.

The Prayer Service was held on August 7, and the Divine Liturgy & Funeral Service on August 8, both at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. Reverend Father Julian Bilyj was the celebrant with interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
