Жінки-українки. Матері, сестри, кохані. Вони часто несли на своїх тендітних плечах тягар воєн і втрат, гніту і безправ’я. Поруч із чоловіками боролися за право українського народу бути вільним і незалежним. Такими були Ольга Басараб, Олена Степанів та Софія Галечко, які створили першу жіночу чоту Українських січових стрільців у Львові.
Ольга Басараб, патронка Організації Українок Канади, визначна громадська і політична діячка, розвідниця, відважна і незламна жінка. Вона народилася 1 вересня 1889 року в селі Підгороддя, що на території Рогатинщини, у родині священника. Навчалася у приватному пансіонаті в Сілезії, у ліцеї в Перемишлі, у Віденській торговій академії.
У 1914 році Ольга вийшла заміж за студента Дмитра Басараба, який через кілька місяців загинув на фронті.
Ольга Басараб працювала бухгалтером посольства України у Відні і водночас була українською розвідницею. Переїхавши в 1923 році до Львова, стала членом Головної управи філії Союзу українок, активно співпрацювала з підпільною Українською військовою організацією (УВО), яка в 1929 році трансформувалася в ОУН, була зв’язковою Євгена Коновальця.
9 лютого 1924 року польська поліція заарештувала українську патріотку. Упродовж кількох днів Ольга витримала страшні тортури, але не виказала українського підпілля. Катам, які імітували самогубство ув’язненої, не вдалося приховати свого злочину. Після ексгумації тіла, проведеної під тиском львів’ян, виявили, що українку замордовано. Їй тоді було тільки 34 роки…
26 лютого сотні тисяч людей прощалися з українською патріоткою на Янівському цвинтарі. Її мученицька смерть стала символом нескореності в боротьбі за соборну і незалежну Україну, а могила національної героїні – місцем паломництва українців.
Іменем Ольги Басараб названі вулиці, товариства, організації. Нескорена галичанка назавжди залишиться в народній пам’яті і не знищити нікому людської пам’яті про тих, хто на вівтар боротьби за волю України поклав найдорожче – життя.
Далеко за межами рідної України, Організація Українок Канади традиційно, у лютому, вшановує пам’ять про цю відважну жінку.
3 лютого під Патронатом Крайової Управи ОУК, за активної співпраці двох Відділів, Торонто-Місто і Торонто-Захід, відбувся вечір вшанування пам’яті Ольги Басараб. Панахиду відправили о.Сенцьо та о. Чорній.
Усі зібрані кошти з цього заходу буде передано на стоматологічні потреби для дітей в дитячих будинках України.
Women-Ukrainians. Mothers, sisters, beloved ones. They often carried on their fragile shoulders the burden of wars and losses, oppression and injustice. Along with men, they fought for the right of the Ukrainian people to be free and independent.
One such person was Olha Basarab, a prominent public and political figure, intelligence officer, a brave and invincible woman: Patron of the Ukrainian Women’s Organization of Canada.
Olha Levytska Basarab was born on September 1, 1889 in the village of Pidhoroddya, Rohatyn county of Halychyna, Western Ukraine, into a priest’s family. She studied at a private school in Silesia (now Czech Republic), at the Lyceum in Peremyshl and at the Vienna Trade Academy. In October 1914, she married student Dmytro Basarab who tragically died seven months later on the Italian front.
Olha worked as an accountant at the Ukrainian embassy in Vienna and became involved in several volunteer charitable organizations. Following the occupation of Western Ukraine by Polish forces in 1919, she joined the Ukrainian resistance. After moving to Lviv in 1923, she became an executive member of the Union of Ukrainian Women, actively collaborated with the underground Ukrainian Military Organization (“YBO”), which in 1929 was transformed into the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (“OYH”) and was an emissary for Yevhen Konovalets.
On February 9, 1924, Polish police arrested her after uncovering intelligence information in her living quarters. Following intensive interrogation and torture, during the night of February 12-13 Olha Basarab died, without disclosing any secrets or names of her associates. She was just 34 years old. She is buried at Yanivsky Cemetery in Lviv, her grave a place of pilgrimage for Ukrainians, and her martyrdom a symbol of tenacity in the struggle for a united and independent Ukraine.
Far beyond the borders of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Women’s Organization of Canada traditionally, in February, commemorates this courageous Ukrainian heroine. On February 3rd, under the auspices of the UWOC National Executive and with the cooperation of both Toronto and Toronto-West branches, an afternoon dedicated to the memory of Olha Basarab was held, with panakhyda served by Rev. Bohdan Sentsio and Rev. Ostap Chorniy. A brief cultural program of commentary, songs and recitations completed the commemoration.
All funds raised from this event will be directed to the Canada Ukraine Foundation’s project providing dental care for children in Ukrainian orphanages.
Ukrainian Women’s Organization of Canada, National Executive, has taken on a fundraising initiative. Through its Gold Cross Fund, our active and generous Branches have partnered with Canada Ukraine Foundation’s Dental Mission in Ukraine for those children living in orphanages. UWOC National, along with its Branches, sought to bring awareness and to support the desperately needed dental care for the children housed in these institutions.
The approximately 45-50 dentists, technicians and hygienists are unpaid volunteers who have completed four missions to date. They are preparing for more missions; however, the vehicle that they use needs to be replaced. Thus, the need for our financial support.
Because the Ukrainian government does not provide funding for any dental care for orphans, your generous donations would help those children’s basic dental needs. A donation of $25.00 or more is eligible for a tax-deductible receipt.
