Outright Russian Invasion of Ukraine Has Begun?

Aug 19, 2014 | News, Featured, Politics, Newpathway

It is increasingly looking as if Russian involvement in Ukraine has transformed from a covert war into an outright invasion. The story of the Russian military convoy crossing the Ukrainian border right in front of Western journalists, which broke out in global media outlets on August 14, is developing.

On Monday, August 18, Yuri Butusov, chief editor of a Ukrainian site censor.net.ua, published an article saying that Russian troops launched a massive counter-attack in the Donbas. In the article, he stressed that, this time, it was Russian regular army attacking Ukrainian forces, not just Russian-supported rebels. This, according to Butusov, completely changed the military situation in the Donbas.

According to Butusov, Russia resorted to the intervention after the advance of the Ukrainian troops made sure that the end of Donetsk and Luhansk “Peoples Republics” was a matter of weeks. Butusov says that, on August 10, Russia began redeploying their armored and artillery units which consisted of “volunteers” and included up to 250 armored vehicles, and 100 guns, mortars and multiple missile launchers. He says that the Russian troops, which are fighting in the Donbas, include such air defense systems as “Strela-10”, “Osa” and “Buk” (the latter shot down the MH-17 flight), which makes it impossible to use the Ukrainian aviation in the border areas.
Butusov notes that the use of hundreds of armored vehicles, artillery and air defense systems, intelligence, communications, repair and supply operations on such scale could only be done by the Russian military, not some rebel groups. Butusov estimates the number of Russian troops fighting against Ukraine on both the Russian and Ukrainian territory at 20 thousand soldiers, including at least three thousand on the Ukrainian territory.

Butusov says that the Russian troops are trying to destroy Ukrainian mobile and artillery units in the ATO zone. He suggests that, becasue of this Russian involvement, Ukraine will have to withdraw its troops from a zone within 30 km of the Russian border. In this area, the Ukrainian troops are virtually defenseless and are suffering mounting losses becase they cannot respond to the artillery fire coming from Russia.
Butusov's information has not been confirmed by the Ukrainian authorities in the same level of detail but many bloggers (facebook.com/bochkala, facebook.com/burkonews and facebook.com/Zlobyn) are providing similar information.

There are many other indications that Yuri Butusov is actually telling the truth. In their recent artile in the Wall Street Journal, Anders Rasmussen, Secretary General of NATO, and Philip Breedlove, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander for Europe, called Russian involvement in Ukraine an “aggression” and talked about “a disruptive Russian presence inside Ukraine”.
President Poroshenko stated on Monday, that 1,200 “skilled thugs” and military equipment had crossed the border. On Monday, Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said that during the talks in Berlin among the foreign ministers of Ukraine, Germany, France and Russia, the Russian minister refused to admit artillery shelling, infiltration of personnel and arms to Ukraine and guarantee that they would stop.
