On June 13, 2019 the Board of Directors of the Shevchenko Foundation, staff, friends and family came together in Winnipeg to honor Lesia Szwaluk, who retired as Executive Director of the Shevchenko Foundation after 18 years of dedicated service.

Ms. Szwaluk’s favorite Chinese restaurant was transformed into a lively Ukrainian party. As they arrived, guests were greeted with the sounds of Ukrainian music, performed by members of Winnipeg’s SICH band.

The Rusalka Ukrainian Dance Ensemble opened the program with the traditional “Pryvit”, which included the presentation of bread and salt, followed by a performance by the Orlan Ukrainian Folk Ensemble. Lastly, the Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus surprised Ms. Szwaluk with a performance of some of her favourite Ukrainian songs. The program concluded with a heartfelt “Mnohaya Lita”, one of many to follow. In between courses, guests enjoyed a number of video tribute greetings from across the country, including from the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers, the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus, filmmaker Danny Schur, and others.

MC and incoming Executive Director, Bohdana Bashuk, introduced Shevchenko Foundation Board President, Andrew Hladyshevsky, Q.C., who reflected on his many years working with Ms. Szwaluk. In honoring her invaluable commitment and dedication to the Shevchenko Foundation and the community at large, Mr. Hladyshevsky, Q.C. announced the establishment of the Lesia Szwaluk Volunteer Leadership Award Designated Fund. The Award will support outstanding young adults volunteering in the Ukrainian Canadian community.

The Shevchenko Foundation is grateful to Ms. Szwaluk for her immeasurable contribution to the growth of the Shevchenko Foundation’s purpose, and wishes her a wonderful retirement!
