Spring Revels in the “Park”

May 5, 2015 | Newpathway, Community, Featured

Stephanie Turenko, Toronto.

Following the Easter Tradition of Haivky (spring songs), the folklore group Kosa Kolektiv planned on leading them in Trinity Bellwoods Park on April 19 this year.

Unfortunately, the chosen day was extremely windy and cold, so quick adjustments were made to accommodate the many families and friends who joined the festivities. The group led some of the brave people in the park with beautiful songs.

After feeling the intensity of the cold, everyone came together at 4 Bellwoods, the location of the Kosa Studio, in the basement hall. Children participated in games such as “ходить жучок”, a song about a walking beetle, where the children must walk across adults’ linked arms which have formed a bridge, and “Cat and Mouse”, a form of tag.

Haivky led by Kosa was truly a community and multi-cultural event. Not only were there Ukrainian performances, but Meden Glas, a Balkan folk group, Javarovy Ludzi, a Belorussian group and Georgian singing group also joined the festivities by sharing their spring songs.

The event ended with village dancing workshop led by Balfolk. Families stayed for hours, making new connections, learning new songs and enjoying food. Even though it was held in a basement, the event was a great success.
