Students Send Support Through Postcards for Prisoners Campaign

Nov 16, 2018 | Community, Featured

Stephanie Nedoshytko, President, SUSK (Ukrainian Canadian Students’ Union).

SUSK partners with Postcards for Prisoners: Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014, Russian authorities have illegally imprisoned at least 70 Ukrainian citizens. Russia has ignored all demands by the international community to stop the invasion of Ukraine and the imprisonment of Ukrainian citizens.

SUSK is pleased to announce the partnership with Postcards for Prisoners to bring awareness to the unjust actions of the Russian Government through letter-writing campaigns at post-secondary institutions across Canada. By engaging post-secondary students of various programs, cities, and backgrounds, we will bring attention to the violations of human rights that are currently taking place at the hands of the Russian regime.

Campus outreach:
Ukrainian Student Organizations (USOs) are taking action by organizing efforts to involve their educational community in the Postcards for Prisoners campaign. The University of Victoria Ukrainian Students’ Society (UVic USS) launched the national campaign by hosting a booth on their campus in late October. The USO encouraged over 75 students to write messages of support to Ukrainian prisoners.

Hosting postcard writing events on campus creates an opportunity for open dialogue. Young academics and students can discuss and learn about Russia’s war against Ukraine and the violation of international law in an open space. This campaign provides an opportunity for students to challenge the Russian government’s propaganda and disinformation, while also providing support for those who are suffering first-hand from human rights violations by the Russian government recognized by the international community.

SUSK applauds the efforts of the UVic USS and all USOs across Canada. We encourage all post-secondary students to join this important movement. If you or your USO are interested in taking part in this initiative, please contact SUSK External Director for more details ([email protected])

If you’d like to join the movement, please join SUSK on social media through the hashtags #PostcardsForPrisoners #FreeSentsov #LetMyPeopleGo
