Paul M. Grod National President, Ukrainian Canadian Congress.
2016 is a year for celebrating milestones.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee (now Congress). We have led and united the community over these 75 years as a direct result of the commitment of our volunteers and generosity of our donors. Your selfless contributions and financial support made this possible. We sincerely thank all of our many volunteers and donors from coast to coast of our great country!
Over 125 years, Ukrainians have enriched Canada, having arrived as immigrant “men in sheepskin coats”, generation after generation, Ukrainian Canadians have distinguished themselves as leaders in our country in areas from government to sport to business to academia, breaking down stereotypes, and helping to make Canada a great nation. This year we proudly celebrate our 125th Anniversary of Ukrainian Immigration to Canada.
Where would Canada be without luminaries and trailblazers like Justice Walter Tarnopolsky, Governor General Rt. Hon. Ramon Hnatyshyn, astronaut Roberta Bondar, nuclear physicist Sylvia Fedoruk and artist William Kurelek? Ukrainians are a founding people of Canada, and Canada would not be the country it is today without the significant contributions Ukrainian Canadian community. Over the next weeks we will be unveiling our plans to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada.
As we welcome 2016 and celebrate the Christmas Season, our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters in Ukraine who have endured and persevered another tumultuous year, bravely defending their country against Russia’s invasion and beginning to put in place wide-ranging reforms to allow them to build a brighter future.
The Ukrainian Canadian community has played a key role in ensuring international support for Ukraine. You make a difference.
Over the past year, UCC was instrumental in the initialing of the Canada Ukraine Free Trade Agreement and on the coordination and implementation of numerous humanitarian and medical projects through our UCC Ukraine Appeal. With your loyal support, we will continue to help the people of Ukraine achieve their rightful destiny as well as build a strong community in Canada for generations to come.
Your commitment to UCC keeps Canadian politicians informed, advising the Government of Canada of what Ukraine needs most and will continue to assist the Government of Canada and the Government of Ukraine to work together to continue and accelerate the reform process in Ukraine.
The 25th Triennial Congress of Ukrainian Canadians will be held in Regina on September 29 – October 2, 2016, where the priorities for the next three years for our community will be set.
You make a difference. Our plans for 2016 will be successful because of your continued assistance. Please visit our site to see how you can volunteer.
Thank you for making a difference. I am humbled by your incredible support and proud to be a part of your Ukrainian Canadian community.
On behalf of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and my family Adrianna, Roman, Danylo, Larysa and Olena, I extend my best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year!
