UCC/UWVA Remembrance Ceremony Held at St. Demetrius Church

Nov 10, 2017 | Community, Featured

Andre Sochaniwsky, President of the Ukrainian War Veterans Association of Canada.

On November 5, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Toronto Branch and the Ukrainian War Veterans Association of Canada held a Remembrance Ceremony. The Ceremony, which usually takes place in the Ukrainian Park on Scarlett Road in Etobicoke, was held in the St Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church due to the weather conditions.

Andre Sochanwsky, President of the Ukrainian War Veterans Association of Canada, made the following speech during the ceremony:

“For the first time that I can recall, we are holding our ceremony indoors and unfortunately have had to cancel our Air Force flypast.

The year 2017 is special for anniversaries of significant military operations and sacrifices of our soldiers.

This year we mark the 100th anniversary of 3 significant WWI battles on the Western Front. One of those battles was the Battle of Passchendaele which took place in Belgium. Nine Victoria Crosses were awarded to Canadians. However, the price of victory was high – four thousand Canadians were killed in the span of 2 months.

We also mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the first occasion in which all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together as a complete formation. Four Victoria Crosses were awarded during this battle.

This past summer, I visited the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France. Carved on the walls of the monument are the names of some 11,285 Canadians who died in France and whose final resting place was then unknown.

More than 7,000 of these fallen heroes are buried in 30 war cemeteries within 20 km of the Vimy Memorial.

Many of the names inscribed on the Vimy monument are distinctly Ukrainian such as Kostenko, Kuchar and Kucheruk. Though the exact number is not known, it is estimated that several thousand of Canadians of Ukrainian descent fought for Canada in World War I.

One of those was Cpl Filip Konowal who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bold actions in combat in the Battle of Hill 70 in August of 1917. The Canadians were once again victorious and fought back 21 counter-attacks from the Germans. Approximately 9,000 Canadians were killed, wounded or taken prisoner at Hill 70. These brave Canadian soldiers cemented the professional reputation of the Canadian Army and helped forge the reputation of Canada as a nation that does not shy away from its obligations.

By the end of the Second World War, 19% of Ukraine’s population or 8 million people were killed. Ukraine suffered more death and carnage in World War II than any other European country.

Today, we continue to witness the occupation of Crimea and eastern Ukraine by Russia.

We have watched the erosion of the rights of the Crimean Tatars and increased violence against them with the Russian occupation of Crimea.

Today, Canadian Forces have deployed personnel in Central and Eastern Europe as part of NATO assurance measures. Since 2015, Canadian troops have been deployed to Ukraine under Operation UNIFIER to mentor Ukrainian forces. For the first time in history, Canadian troops marched through the streets of Kyiv to mark Ukraine’s 26th year of Independence.

In September of this year, Toronto hosted the Invictus Games. For the first time, Ukraine participated in these games, fielding a team of 30 athletes, many of whom were restricted to wheel chairs, had missing limbs and scared with the wounds of battle in eastern Ukraine. Many of the team members were young veterans in their mid-twenties, an age that is normally the commencement of one’s productive life and full of optimism and ambition. They have suffered immensely to defend their country, provide a better future for their nation and “stand the ground” on international law.

Let our presence here today and every year be our eternal commitment to our fallen.
